Hungary

Designed by the architects Mór Kallina and Aladár Árkay, standing on the Corvin square in Buda, this monumental, neo-Renaissance building formerly known as a redoute for the bourgeois of Buda became the home of the Heritage House.

The new covering of the courtyard created a lofty public and event space, so that the wooden seating – serving both as auditorium and leisure area – is using the difference between the two street levels. The post-war loft additions have been demolished, thus the original space was restored.

Thanks to the reconstruction the main staircase regained its skylight. The salon – now in its old architectural splendour – instead of the non-flexible auditorium was provided with a mobile tribune. By heading the rear wall it was possible to move the stage backwards, leaving more space for the audience.

Depending on the use, the auditorium also can serve as a flat floored salon and thus the restoring of the ornaments gets a special importance.

The appearance of the building from the outside is dominated by the historical façade, the new attic level is nearly invisible from the street.

This new level gives home for the Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. Besides the wide span fitting rooms, the new panoramic level is dedicated for the changing-rooms, rest rooms and the cantine.
