Pannonia Primary School

Budapest, District 13, Tutaj street,
Hungary
Public, Heritage, Other
2009

The task was to plan the reconstruction and the extension of Pannonia Primary school, built in 1911 according to the plans of János Schulek. During the redesign, the existing school’s layout structure was followed, and the gym features were placed into a new building.

Our principle was that the existing building should keep its traditional character while the extension was to communicate a clearly contemporary image.

By forming the gymnasium wing, our intension was to create a building fitting into its environment with a fresh appearance that indicates the internal function as well.

It fits to its surroundings as a single building which is not only part of the school’s architecture, but also a counterpoint to that. The façade is indicating that the two gym halls are above each other.

The grooves that soften the stone-covered, steel-framed building volume are also loosing the strict grid façade of the old building.

Atop of the building a rooftop garden was created. The interior of the gymnasium wing mirrors – in harmony with the appearance of the façade – a fresh approach. Simplicity, homogeneous surfaces and clear composition are in dominance.
