Millennium House

Budapest, District 14, Városliget,
Hungary
Public, Heritage
2019

As part of the Liget Project, the goal of the exterior reconstruction of the 1885 exhibition building, designed by Ferenc Pfaff, was to restore its original appearance. The main entrance was restored to its former position, the later raised roofs were restored to their original state, and during the façade restoration we also reconstructed the destroyed decorative Zsolnay elements.

The building was converted into a sculpture workshop, and even the original slabs were not preserved. During the reconstruction, the middle public space structure was restored. However instead of the triple division the new functions required larger spaces, so the original spatial proportions were achieved by placing these walls but completely opening them up to lintel height.

On one side of the building the Millennial Zsolnay Café is to be found, while on the other side is an exhibition space. In a contemporary way, the new round staircase connects the public with basement areas, such as museum pedagogical and projection spaces.

The interior of the restaurant was designed by Miklós Kiss, the exhibition space by Dániel Taraczky, and the public interiors by the Archikon.
