Atmosphere is a central problem is aesthetics, humanities, social- and neuroscience, and also in architecture and urban studies. The role of affective components – feelings and moods – in experience and the nature of their background quality have become more valued and have come to the forefront. As a consequence we can talk about the so-called affective-turn, the impact of which is now perceptible in most disciplines. This provides an important theoretical background for architecture, as the affective-sensory dimension of experience brings the receiver and lived experiences to the forefront. And for architects, it serves as an applied design method, in which their own felt-body and previous experiences act as the most important reference points.
