The reconstruction of the Acropolis of Byrsa and rehabilitation of the National Museum of Carthage

For thousands of years, Carthage and Mount Byrsa have been places of change: building and destruction have followed each other. The city today is a monument to this constant change. Once closely linked to Tunis, the two cities have since lost their links. The project addresses this situation, focusing on reintegrating these areas in physical, infrastructural and social aspects. The instrument of this change will be the creation of a new architectural and landscape cultural centre in Carthage.

The area is fragmented, with an almost illegible mix of superimposed eras. The architectural concept is to interpret historical events for visitors, to experience and thus understand history.

The point of arrival is the entrance to the new complex. Passing through the monumental gateway is an entry into history and a crossing into the world of the imagination, where the connections and layering of the ages is symbolised by the tamped concrete. The presence of Roman reservoirs and viaducts in the area is also symbolic of the fact that water is the carrier of life: where there is water, the cycle cannot stop. Similarly, the site is brought to life by people visiting it – as the plan is to revitalise the area.
