Market as a Cultural Public Space

The renovation of the Hunyadi Square Market Hall is expected to begin in 2024. The building in Terézváros was designed by Győző Czigler and constructed in 1879, opening simultaneously with four other market halls (Klauzál Square Market Hall, Hold Street Market Hall, Rákóczi Square Market Hall, and the Central Market Hall). The restoration and renovation of this building – located in a World Heritage site – will lead to an urbanistic rethink of the area. An active connection will be established with Szófia Street and Hunyadi Square, allowing the market hall and its functions to flow into the surrounding public spaces. Communities and organizations will be able to participate in the life of the building, with cultural programs and various events further enhancing the market’s role. The hall will be bustling with life all year round, offering opportunities not only for shopping but for active recreation as well. As a semi-private public space, the market will become a new hub for community life.
