• „PANNONIA” – ELEMENTARY SCHOOL - 2009. - Budapest

Our task was to plan the reconstruction and the extension of Pannonia Elementary school originally designed by János Schulek in 1911. During the redesign following the existing school’s layout, we placed the gym features into a new building. According to our principle the existing building kept its traditional character while the extension was to communicate a clearly contemporary image. Forming the gymnasium wing, our intention was to create a building fitting into its environment with a fresh appearance that implies the internal function as well. It assimilates to the surrounding development as a single building which is not part of the school’s architecture but it forms a counterpoint to that. The facade suggests the two superposed gyms. The strict grid facade of the old building is loosened by the playful design of the grooves that soften the stone-covered and steel-framed building volume. Atop the volume a roof garden was created. The interior of the gymnasium building mirrors - in harmony with the facade appearance - a fresh approach. Instead of decorative detailing here dominates the simplicity, homogeneous surfaces and the clear composition. As an interior designer the Kroki Studio took part in the planning.

The building has been awarded with the Budapest Architecture Niveau Prize in 2009.
